Tâmpa Cable Car Station Repurposing, featured in Zile și Nopți
The repurposing of the Tâmpa cable car station, a project by arch. Liviu Zărnovean, has been featured by the Romanian magazine Zile și Nopți in an article on the architectural role of cable car stations.
About the intervention
Set at the boundary between Brașov's historic centre and the mountain, the station receives a new steel-and-glass circulation system that resolves accessibility and the safety of visitor flows.
The intervention draws a clear line between old and new: the accretions added over the years were removed to restore the coherence of the original volume, while the contemporary layer remains transparent and legible as a present-day gesture. The station keeps its familiar presence in the memory of the city and, at the same time, adapts to the way people travel today.
The approach pursues a twofold sustainability: material, through the conservation of the existing concrete structure, and cultural, through the preservation of the visual identity of the place. In the author's reading, a station of this kind becomes „a scenography of discovery" — a threshold between city and mountain rather than a mere technical annex.
